This tribute is on behalf of those of us (mentees) who believed so much in Professor Akin Adesola, the Nigerian Academy of Science where he was one of the earliest Fellows and of which I am the President as well as myself as a former Vice Chancellor of this great University of “first choice and nation’s pride”!

The Nigerian Academy of Science is hosting a two-day workshop on Integrated Disease Surveilance and Response (IDSR) in West Africa. The workshop is billed to hold on the 3rd and 4th of August 2010 in Abuja, Nigeria. Collaborators include The Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria, CDC Abuja and Atlanta and W.H.O.
Paricipants are expected from all states in the West African subregion and will discuss the status, challenges and way forward with respect to IDSR in the subregion.

History was made at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock Abuja on Thursday, 8^th of October, 2009 when Past Presidents, Council Members, Fellows, and staff of the Nigerian Academy of Science witnessed the oath taking of His Excellency, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua GCFR; President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria as the Grand Patron of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

The Nigerian Academy of Science elected six distinguished scientists into the Academy at its Annual General Meeting held in Lagos on the 23^rd of January, 2010. They are:

• Professor Nicholas Agiobi Damachi – Professor of Industrial Engineering
• Professor Abba Gumel – Professor of Mathematics
• Dr. Sonny Folorunsho Kuku – Doctor Of Medicine
• Professor Siyanbola Malomo – Professor of Geology
• Professor Francisca Okeke - Physicist

Concern over access to clean water is no longer just an issue for the developing world, as California faces its worst drought in recorded history. According to state's Department of Water Resources, supplies in major reservoirs and many groundwater basins are well below average. Court-ordered restrictions on water deliveries have reduced supplies from the two largest water systems, and an outdated statewide water system can't keep up with population growth.
